At the beginning of 2024, I was commissioned to create seven (7) mosaic murals on all of the vertical walls of the Discovery Corner Plaza in the Discovery West neighborhood totaling 240 sq. ft. of tilework. I created 2 full concepts each with 7 mural designs for the project both based on the theme of "Discovery" through science. The concept that was chosen is based on "Discovery" through Physics.
After the design was chosen, I started estimating the amount of tile needed - over 1000 lbs! I picked up 900 lbs of gorgeous tile from McIntyre Tile (founded in 1972) in Healdsburg, CA. They make beautiful vitrified tile that mosaic artists can use outdoors in freeze/thaw environments such as Bend, OR.
On April 1, I started fabricating two of the murals to be installed on the vertical planter faces across from the Fire Pit Ring. Here is a sneak peek of one of the planter murals.
We now have concrete! The sub-contractors are busy putting the plaza together. They did a great job creating the inlay areas where my murals will fit into.
I am currently fabricating the mosaic that will be installed on the Fire Pit Ring Surround. A metal pine cone sculpture has been fabricated and will be installed inside of the circle and have flames coming up through it.
Here is a sneak peek of my Work In Progress from way high up on a ladder!
Stay Tuned! More updates to come!
