Welcome to Discovery Corner!
One year ago this week, I started the design for this huge site specific mosaic installation (240 sq ft). With full artistic freedom to create murals on the 7 curved seat walls, I researched for several months. Discovery West neighborhood is filled with discovery and exploration, and honors the intelligent, courageous, inquisitive, and inspiring women who have contributed so much to our world. With my science background, I want people to"discover" something about the mechanical waves from Physics.
Mechanical Waves - A series of mosaic murals
Seeing Sound 1
Seeing Sound 2
Musicians can "see" sound waves or waveforms that they produce when a microphone is connected to an oscilloscope. The microphone takes the sound waves and changes them into electrical signals, and then, displays changes in a wave's amplitude (height) over time. My design represents various sound waves superimposed upon each other.
Deschutes Meander Belt 1
Deschutes Meander Belt 2
Meanders are considered a form of wave phenomenon. Meandering rivers are located on flat terrain that reduces the flow speed of water waves, allowing the river to curve or "meander". An oxbow lake starts out as a curve in a river, but erodes through the neck of one of its meanders forming a circular lake. Our upper Deschutes River has various meanders along its course, but most notable the Upper Deschutes Meander Belt- a great place for a float or paddle!
Seismic Crush
This design is an abstraction of stratigraphic cross sections of layers of rock that have been affected by earthquakes, magma, pressure, and Seismic Waves.
