“You Are Here” mural

Production by 50 community members, neighborhood visitors, and visiting artists 

 

During my apprenticeship with Laurel in New Orleans in January 2014, our team spent time along with some neighborhood members working on this community mosaic mural project that she created in partnership with the Clouet Gardens Association. She describes the design as “a cosmic map depicting a stylized river and garden,” including some of the distinctive mosaic eyes that make appearances in much of her work. The eyes in “You Are Here” were contributed by artists from the Mirebalais Mosaic Collective in Haiti, who she trained in the years after the 2010 earthquake. Two mosaic benches sit facing the mural, providing a space to examine it.
