“Lightstorm” Digital Mural for Design N Gather Competition 2016- Top 3 Finalist

Design ‘N Gather (DNG) is a much-heralded, annual global mosaic design competition created by Artaic – Innovative Mosaic (artaic.com) and sponsored by Bostik Smart Adhesives (bostik.com).  The competition welcomes designers, artists, and collaborative groups from all disciplines to design by using Artaic’s proprietary software program to create a digital mosaic.  Once the design is complete, this software program is coupled with their innovative robotic assembly system that loads the palette colors of tile and Bostik’s adhesive and grout to create an architecturally compelling mosaic.

 

Artaic started the Design ‘N Gather competition in 2013 in Boston, MA.  Every year the contest is moved to a new location.  In 2016, the competition was part of the Hospitality Design Industry’s annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada – HD Expo and the winning design was to be made into a full-scale mosaic, robotically, and installed at Wet Republic, MGM Grand’s 54,500 sq ft pool venue.

 

For DNG 2016, the design was to portray the energy, life, and essence of Las Vegas through narrative and design, literal or abstract using these words as inspiration:  BOLD, MODERN, VIBRANT, ENERGETIC, and CUTTING EDGE. 

 

Light attracts.  My inspiration for my design “Lightstorm” came from growing up in Reno and later, marrying a native of Las Vegas.  My memories are of glitzy colorful lights downtown, spotlights combing the sky, vibrant moving lights, constant noise, and lots of action inside casinos, laser shows outside at parties & concerts, and all of the people drawn to the fun, excitement, and energy filling the air day & night.  In my abstract design, I aimed to capture all of the energy emanating from the lights that are to me the essence of Las Vegas by attracting people to come and feel young again.

 

I was awarded one of the Top 3 Designs at DNG 2016.  I was flown to Las Vegas along with the other two Top 3 finalists to see our designs on display at the Artaic/Bostik booth at the HD Expo and participate at the Expo’s signature social event, “Party by the Pool” at the MGM where we were brought on stage to speak about our designs and be a part of the grand finale “unveiling” of the winner’s design turned full-scale mosaic installed on the MGM Wet Republic’s wall.  The winning design was named “Deltawaves” by Nicole Kohri, of a woman’s head with headphones on.  The 3rd finalist was “Fun in the Sun” by Kate Henderson.
